COALINGA — No. 13-seeded Coalinga College put together one of its most complete performances of the season on Wednesday night, sweeping No. 20 Yuba College 25-14, 25-11, 25-20 in its opening-round match of the 2025 Northern California Regional Playoffs.
Outside hitter Amber Cerny led the Falcons with a standout showing, racking up 15 kills on 31 swings (.387) while adding 14 digs and a team-high 16 points. Cerny's all-around play controlled the tempo from start to finish and proved to be a mismatch for the Yuba defense.
Middle hitter Aurora Sotelo delivered another strong outing with 10 kills, 3 service aces, and a block assist, finishing with 13.5 points. Sotelo's presence at the net and pressure from the service line helped Coalinga build early scoring runs in each set.
Coalinga's offense continued to fire on all cylinders thanks to contributions across the board. Shianne Davis tallied 8 kills and a block assist, while Kinnedy Miller added 8 kills on an efficient .429 hitting percentage, giving the Falcons multiple reliable scoring threats.
The Falcons' attack was fueled by clean distribution from setters Jenna Vogt and Natalie Walsh. Vogt posted 26 assists and an ace, while Walsh added 11 assists in the three-set win.
From the back row, Kambri McKeeman anchored the defense with a match-high 17 digs and sparked Coalinga's momentum from the service line with 4 aces.
Coalinga finished the match hitting .272 as a team, dominating both offensively and defensively while holding Yuba to just 14 and 11 points in the first two sets. Yuba mounted its strongest challenge in the third, but the Falcons closed strong to complete the sweep.
With the victory, Coalinga improved to 16-10 overall and advances to a second-round match on Tuesday (Nov. 25) at No. 4-seed Monterey Peninsula College. The Lobos received a first-round bye and enter the playoff contest with a 21-2 overall record.
The winner moves on to Round 3 match of the regional playoffs on Saturday (Nov. 29).
