Falcons rally in fourth quarter to win at Delta

STOCKTON – Quarterback Justyn Delzeit tossed three touchdown passes, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter, to help lead Coalinga College to a 28-21 win at San Joaquin Delta College on Saturday.

The Falcons bounced back from a couple of tough losses to open the season and are now 1-2 overall.

"It was a big win to get back on track and even bigger it was on the road against a good opponent in Delta," said Coalinga head coach Justin Berna. "We played very well on offense and defense and have really improved each week."

It was a game of ups and downs for the Falcons. Delta (1-2) scored a pair of touchdowns in the opening quarter to jump out to a 14-0 lead. Coalinga responded with two TDs of its own in the second quarter. Delzeit tossed touchdowns to Marcos Ruiz (25 yards) and Ke'Marian Alber (34 yards) to close out a pair of long drives.

The Mustangs closed a 10-play drive just moments before halftime with a 14-yard rushing touchdown to take a 21-14 lead into the break.

Neither team scored in the third but the Falcons were able to rally in the fourth to pull out the win. The Falcons busted out the trick play to tie up the score. Wide receiver Khalif Bloome took a pass in the backfield and tossed it down the sideline to a streaking Curtis Rodgers who hauled it in for a 35-yard touchdown at the 14:47 mark.

Minutes later, Delzeit led the Falcons downfield for the winning drive. Delzeit and Bloome connected again, this time with Bloome catching a big 54-yard touchdown pass to put Coalinga out in front for good with 4:49 to play.

But the game wasn't over. The Coalinga defense had to come up with one final stand to secure the victory. With Delta driving, Christian Constant intercepted Delta QB Ubedei McGautha's pass in the Falcons' end zone to end the threat and close out the game.

Delzeit had an impressive game for the Falcons. He completed 18 of 29 passes for 273 yards and 3 TDs. David Dunn led receivers with 6 catches for 85 yards while Bloome ended with 4 receptions for 84 yards. Demarion Wright was solid on the ground with 16 carries for 71 yards.

Nathaniel Stroud led the defense with 6 tackles to go along with a sack and a forced fumble. Deagen Speer totaled 2 sacks and Constant had 4 tackles and the big interception.

Coalinga will look to keep the momentum going next Saturday (Sep. 20) when the Falcons host Chabot College in a 1 p.m. game.
