Early deficit too much for Falcons in loss at Los Medanos

PITTSBURG – The Coalinga College offense totaled an impressive 468 yards but turnovers halted numerous drives leading to the Falcons' 41-20 loss at Los Medanos College on Saturday.

A 19-0 deficit in the second quarter was too much for Coalinga to overcome.

"Overall, we didn't play awful," said Coalinga head coach Justin Berna. "We just had some really bad breaks and missed opportunities. They got two turnovers on tipped batted balls. We just have to clean up the turnovers.

"On defense, we showed flashes but gave up a few big plays."

The Falcons finally got on the board at the 5:29 mark in the second quarter. Quarterback Justyn Delzeit led Coalinga on a nine-play, 52-yard drive the ended with a two-yard touchdown reception by David Dunn.

Moments later, Coalinga cut that lead to five points. The Falcons went 42 yards over 10 plays with Demarion Wright finding the end zone thanks to a nine-yard pass from Delzeit. Coalinga was down 19-14 with 29 seconds left in the half and clearly felt momentum was shifting back towards its side.

But that didn't last long as Los Medanos returned the ensuing kickoff 34 yards, completed a 20-yard pass, and then got a 35-yard TD with just three seconds left in the half to dash the Falcons' hopes with a 27-14 deficit at the break.

Delzeit tossed his third touchdown of the contest in the third, a 13-yard TD reception by Kahlif Bloome, to close out the Falcons' scoring.

Delzeit completed 28 of 46 passes for 339 yards with 3 TDs but also 3 interceptions. Bloome had a huge game with 9 receptions for 160 yards and a touchdown while Wright ran 21 times for 101 yards. He also had 5 catches for 48 yards.

"We had some bright spots on offense," said Berna. "Bloome and Wright played great and the offensive line was solid.

"We are improving and have to continue as we move toward conference play in a few weeks."

Coalinga, now 0-2, is back on the road next Saturday (Sep. 13) at 1 p.m. when the Falcons travel to face San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton.
