Falcons wrap up sweep of Victor Valley with 8-3 win

COALINGA — The Coalinga College Falcons completed a three-game sweep of the Victor Valley College Saturday afternoon, topping the Rams 8-3 in the finale of the series. 

Coalinga struck first in the opening frame when Jacob Sablan delivered an RBI-single that plated Ryne Yoshimura for a 1-0 lead. The Falcons extended the lead in the sixth with a run scored on an Isaac Flores run-scoring single that brought Sablan home, putting Coalinga ahead 2-1.

The Falcons broke the game open in a decisive seventh inning, scoring three times to turn the tide for good. Sablan came through with another RBI with a key base hit that brought in Teruki Kato, and Flores followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Rey Garcia. Coalinga's offense didn't let up, using the eighth inning to tack on three more runs highlighted by Kato's two-run single that scored Carlos Perez and Titan Pasco. Kato later scored on a passed ball to stretch the lead.

Jacob Sablan: 3 hits, 2 RBI

Carlos Perez: 3 hits, 2 stolen bases, scored twice

Teruki Kato: 2 RBI and 2 runs scored

Ryne Yoshimura: scored once and contributed a hit early to set the tone.

Coalinga finished the game with 11 hits and 7 stolen bases.

On the mound, Rudy Amaya was dominant, tossing six strong innings while allowing only one run on one hit and striking out eight. Reliever Tanner Tammarine earned the win, working 2 2/3 scoreless innings to secure the final frame and finish off the sweep.

The Falcons improved to 3-2 overall on the season. Coalinga is back in action on Tuesday (Feb. 3) when the squad travels to Sacramento City College for a non-conference game.
