The West Hills Volleyball Team travelled to Monterey Saturday for the Monterey Peninsula College Classic tournament. The Falcons, looking to improve from last weekend, fell to Los Medanos College in straight sets. Sophomore OutsIde Hitter Andrea Lopez recorded 16 digs and 5 kills on 13 attempts. Sophomore setter Isabella Galang dished 15 assists while Freshman Setter Mia Maduaña added 4. In the end, errors proved to be costly.
"Los Medanos is a good team and definitely made us work", Coach Wanderer said of the match. "In the end, we made way too many mistakes and gave away way too many points" Sophomore Middle Hitter Magali Renteria agreed, "We did a really great job staying as unit and fighting, but we failed to find solutions quick enough" Renteria went on to add, "We're definitely motivated to raise our standard and we're going definitely fight for every point as a team. We'll definitely pick it up for the next one"
The afternoon match featured the Falcons facing off with host Monterey Peninsula College. The Falcons have had a long back and forth rivalry with Monterey dating back to 2000. The Falcons quickly regrouped from the earlier loss and came out with vengeance in a 25-19 first set win. Monterey returned the favor and took set 2 25-11. Led behind Andrea Lopez's career high 26 kills, 21 digs from freshman Libero Felicia Ruguian, and 4 service aces from Magali Renteria the Falcons went on to win the five set thriller 15-9 in the fifth set.
"There was no way we were going to repeat what we did in the first match", Renteria noted. "We were determined to play to our standards". Coach Wanderer was pretty proud after the match, "the team did a wonderful job getting their composure back. It is pretty easy to get discouraged after the way we played in the first match, but they bounced back really well." Wanderer went on to say, "I'm just feel really proud for them. They worked really, really hard and they have so much pride, it's great to see their resiliency"
The Falcons are on the road again on Wednesday, Sept 11 to Fremont for the Ohlone Classic Tournament where they will face host Ohlone College and get the rematch with Los Medanos College. Matches begin at 1 pm.
