Falcon Volleyball Opens 2019 Campaign

The West Hills Coalinga Women's Volleyball Team opened the 2019 campaign with back to back tournaments Labor Day weekend. On Friday, the Falcons travelled to Modesto Junior College for the Modesto Quad Tournament. The Falcons lost in four sets to host Modesto Junior College. Sophomore Middle Blocker Magali Renteria hit a career high 0.714 hitting percentage on 14 attempts and Freshman Outside Hitter Madisyn Baxter added 14 kills. The Falcons out hit the Pirates, but fell in the opening match. 

"We did a really nice job when we we were in system", Coach Wanderer said of the match. "In the end, we missed too many serves and gave a few too many points away." The falcons had 14 serving errors in the match. "We're extremely excited about where this team is going. We clean up our play, and it'll be pretty fun to watch"

The Falcons then took on Cosumnes River College, losing in straight sets. Mia Bouttavong-Mayberry led the team with 9 points in the loss. 

On Saturday, the Falcons travelled to Alameda for the 10th Annual Cougar Classic where the faced Skyline College from the Coast Conference. The Falcons got the first win of the season defeating Skyline 3-0. The Falcons hit .358 for the match in the win. Freshman Outside Hitter, Fallon Alviso led the team with 11 points and Mia Bouttavong-Mayberry added 15 digs to open the day. "Skyline was a really scrappy, defensive team. They really made us earn all of our points", Wanderer said about the match. Following the win, the Falcons faced City College of San Francisco. "San Francisco was a really great challenge for us", Wanderer said. "They were a great defensive team, tranistioned really well, and could really bring the heat". Mia Bouttavong-Mayberry led the team with 12 points and 11 digs. Freshman Libero Felicia Ruguian added 11 digs and Sophomore Isabella Galang dished 27 assists. The Falcons won the opening set 25-20, but then began to run out gas, losing in four sets.

The Falcons next travel to Monterey for the Monterey Peninsula Tournament on Friday, Sept 6.
