Freshman Stephanie Cervantes pitched 12.1 innings without allowing a run, as the WHCC Falcons swept Cerro Coso, 4-0 and 14-6 (6 INN), in Tuesday's Central Valley Conference opener.
In Game 1, Cervantes earned her first collegiate shutout - allowing just four hits, while striking out five Coyotes. The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd, when Kendra Hawken (single, steal) scored on a double by Destiny Duran.
WHCC scored two runs in the 4th, getting after a lead-off double by Abbie Nodal, an RBI triple by Sydney Ramirez, and an RBI double by Brenna Cortez.
Cortez added an RBI-groundout in the 6th to plate Desirae Nodal for a 4-0 lead.
Cerro Coso threatened to score in the top of the 6th, loading the bases with two outs, but Cervantes forced a pop-up in the infield to end the inning.
In Game 2, the Coyotes jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first inning - chasing starting Falcons pitcher Jordan Vlotho. Cervantes entered the game and allowed just three hits over the last 5.1 scoreless innings.
The Falcons responded on offense, scoring three runs in the first and four in the second to take a 7-6 lead.
Six WHCC players had at least two hits, as the team exploded for 18 total. Cortez went 4-for-5 with three runs; ans Hawken and Ramirez both went 3-for-4. Selena Rea finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs - including a game-ending two-run single in the sixth.
UP NEXT: WHCC will host Merced on Thursday (2pm) for a single game.
