The West Hills College Coalinga football team will look to bounce back from a tough 31-28 loss at Merced. The Falcons (0-1, 1-2) will host Cabrillo College (0-0, 1-2) on Saturday at 6 p.m.
The Seahawks are coming off their first win of the season – a 48-26 victory against San Jose City College.
WHCC nearly overcame five turnovers and 110 penalty yards to upset Merced, the top-ranked team in the NCFC American Division. The Falcons led 14-0 at halftime, and again 28-24 with 9:29 remaining in the game, but the Blue Devils scored on a 59-yard pass play and held off a late WHCC drive that ended inside the red zone.
The Falcons once again had plenty of great individual performances, including: QB Myron Norfleet (career-highs of 307 passing yds and 4 TDs; one rushing TD, his seventh of the season); WR Eugene Wells (9 rec, 95 yds, 2 TDs); DB Doniaj Smelker (team-high 10 tackles, one for loss); and interceptions by LB Michael Palmer and DB Uwadia Ogbebor.
“We made too many mistakes to overcome in the end,” said WHCC head coach Justin Berna.
“I like the way we continue to battle through adversity. More guys are stepping up for us with valuable playing time. We have another good test this week with Cabrillo. After two tough road games, it’s nice to return to our home stadium.”
