Sophomores Lead The Way In Homecoming Win

The West Hills College Coalinga Falcons improved to 2-1 in the Golden Coast League, and kept their postseason goal within reach, with a 24-7 homecoming victory against the Hartnell College Panthers on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday marked the seventh consecutive game to open the season where the Falcons played a team ranked ahead of them. West Hills (4-3 overall) entered the game at No. 8 in the American Division, and Hartnell (4-4) was No. 5.

Also, through the first seven weeks, the Falcon offense has been sparked by freshman QB Myron Norfleet's state-leading 13 rushing touchdowns. Norfleet was able to find the endzone once (1-yd TD in the second quarter) against a tough Panther defense, but he had plenty of help by WHCC's second-year players.

On special teams, sophomore CB Andreaz Spencer scored on an electrifying 55-yard punt return for the game's first score (1st Q, 2:00) - as he took a short punt off of a bounce and zig-zagged his way from sideline to sideline, picking up a wall of blockers on his way to the endzone. Last week, Spencer returned a kickoff for a score at Monterey.

On defense, the Falcons were once again led by the sophomore group of LB Josh Parks (11 tackles, 9 solo, 2 sacks, 3.5 TFL, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery), DL Michael Lightsey (7 solo tackles, 1 sack, 3 TFL, one forced fumble), DL Eric Powell (5 tackles, 2 sacks, 2.5 TFL), and LB Michael Palmer (5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL, 1 pass breakup).

Sophomore QB J.T. Bradwell had his longest run of the season - a 37-yard touchdown to seal the game, giving the Falcons a 24-7 lead with 3:01 left in the game.

Placekicker Blake Hanngi connected on his three extra-points and his 25-yard field goal gave WHCC an early 10-0 lead.

The Falcons defense (six sacks, three turnovers) held Hartnell to just 244 yard of total offense, as the Panthers only converted on 2-of-14 attempts on third down.

Sophomore RB D'Andre Van Exel led the team in rushing with 63 yards on the ground (4.5 ypc).
